Disabled advocate, Alta politician dies

EDMONTON(CP) - A veteran Alberta politician who died from a debilitating paraplegic-related illness will be remembered as a voice for people with disabilities.

Percy Wickman, former Alberta Liberal and Edmonton city alderman died Saturday night at the age of 63. "He never let the obstacles of life get in the way of doing the right thing for the most people," said Kevin Taft, Alberta Liberal leader. "He was a real pioneer for people with disabilities going back decades."

Wickman was first elected to Edmonton city council in 1977. He later served as a Liberal member, famously defeating then-premier Don Getty in the 1989 provincial election.

Having lost the use of his legs in a work-place accident at the age of 24, Wickman later became an advocate for people with disabilities.

He was honoured by the Canadian Paraplegic Association with an award in his name and recently received the Order of Canada.

Alberta Premier Ralph Klein issued a statement Sunday, commending Wickman's years of service.

"Whether inside or outside of the legislature, Percy inspired Albertans by example," said Klein. "He thought of others before himself. He showed personal courage and resilience. He reminded us that strength of character is what truly distinguishes a person."

Wickman is survived by his wife of 43 years, a son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren.
