Peterborough, Ontario, Mayor Sylvia Sutherland plans to pose in the buff for a provocative calendar to raise money for the city's flood disaster relief program. "The Mayor and some of her lady friends, all over 50, got together and decided to do this to raise money for the flood relief," said Peterborough Councillor Paul Rexe.

"The majority of the community supports their efforts."

Damage to homes, business and city infrastructure from massive flood in July has been estimated at over $100 million.

The idea for a clothing-optional calendar to raise money was sparked by the story of a group of women in Yorkshire, England, who posed for a calendar to raise money for leukemia research, which inspired the movie Calendar Girls.

"Anyone who has seen the Yorkshire calendar knows it was tastefully done," said Rexe.

Peterborough Councillor Garry Herring, who is also a pastor, says Sutherland should be more respectful to the office of mayor.

"What she does in her private life is her business. She shouldn't use the office of the mayor for this," Herring said.

Sutherland, who is on holidays for a week, has said if people have objections to the mayor's chain of office being used in the photo, she might reconsider using it as a prop.

The ladies have until November to have their pictures taken in order for the calendar to hit the shelves for Christmas sales.
