Feds hand over flood relief to Alberta
By DOUG MCINTYRE -- Calgary Sun

Funding relief continues to pour in for flood-damaged southern and central Alberta communities soaked by the torrential June storms of 2002 and 2005.

Federal Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day yesterday gave a $4.6 million cheque to Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Ray Danyluk, the final federal payment of an $8.8-million total for the 2002 floods.

"Canada's new government is taking action to help Alberta as it rebuilds public infrastructure and repairs uninsurable private property following severe flooding in 2002 and 2005," Day said.

A $20-million federal advance paid last November will assist the province as it continues to assess damage from the 2005 floods that hit more than 63 Alberta municipalities.

Danyluk said the final damage tab for the latter disaster is estimated at $163 million.

Under the formula for federal disaster relief, the feds would pay $130 million of this total, he added.

"The municipalities are still compiling some of the information," said Danyluk.
