BELLEVILLE, Ont. (CP) — Miss Universe 2007, a dancer from Japan, graduated from an eastern Ontario high school and also studied ballet in the province.

Riyo Mori, 20, who hopes to one day open an international dance school, was crowned the winner of the beauty pageant Monday night.

Mori graduated from Centennial Secondary School in Belleville, Ont., in 2005 and is also a former student at the Quinte Ballet School.

Centennial principal Mandy Savoury-Whiteway says she kept in touch with Mori after graduation, when she went to New York to audition for the Rockettes.

Savoury-Whiteway says she was thrilled to see the young woman take home the crown.

Mori, from the small town of Shizuoka at the base of Mount Fuji, won cheers from the Mexico City audience when she opened her interview, saying “Hola, Mexico!”
