Spirits high despite deluge
By SUN MEDIA

WINNIPEG -- As a stubborn Red River crest refuses to leave the Emerson area, the region's MLA says spirits remain high because major damage has largely been avoided.

"There really hasn't been a lot of anxiety with the disruption," Emerson MLA Cliff Graydon said yesterday from his Altona office. "People are inconvenienced. They have to go by boat to their properties, but they know the dikes won't breach ... There's lots of water, but there's been nothing major (damaged)," he said.

A little farther north, however, the Riverview Golf and Country Club in Morris is one giant water hazard.

The course, which is located outside the town's ring dike, is completely under water as flood waters have surrounded the town. Morris is also feeling the effects of the flood-related closure of Highway 75, which normally brings traffic down the town's main drag.

Flood forecaster Alf Warkentin said melting snow and overflowing tributaries have prevented floodwaters from lowering in the Emerson area for more than four days.
