'Our little girl is gone'
Parents of dead teen express their grief in letter to the Sun
By SUN MEDIA
The Edmonton Sun

Portions of a letter from Cassie Eyre's parents that was e-mailed to the Edmonton Sun:

... Cassie was like any 14-year-old. Like most teenagers she spent a lot of time on Nexopia and Facebook ... Cassie was a girl very close to her family and her friends. She was loved by all. She had dreams to great aspirations.

This Wednesday she was registering at Vic performing arts. Cassie's dream was to sing and act. Cassie had an amazing voice. She is an amazing child. I am Guy Buehler her stepfather and her mother is Angela Eyre. We, the parents of this amazing girl, are in shock at this moment. Our little girl's life ended on April 25, 2009, at 4:35 p.m. As known to us, she took six ecstasy pills on Friday just before Rock 'n' Ride at WEM.

By 8:30 p.m., she was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest, where she fought (for) her life for the next 20 hours. Her heart wasn't strong enough to keep the blood pressure up, her poor little heart beating 180 per minute to try to supply blood to her brain and body.

By 2:30 a.m. they tried to put her on life support, with family and friends all remaining vigil in the waiting room, praying for her to make it. By 5:30 a.m. they finally were successful in getting her on life-support.

With only brief moments to see her, they prepped her for surgery. Her blood would be circulated through a machine to add oxygen to aid in her recovery. As the hours passed, our worry grew. By early afternoon we realized that Cassandra would not be making it.

Her mother started to bring everyone in ... to say their goodbyes, refusing to leave her side, as we did not want to leave her alone. With Cassie's family beside her, her life support, that was keeping her alive, was shut off. Shortly after, she passed away.

We thank everyone at Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The nurses and the doctors were fantastic in their efforts and support. Their dedication and determination was incredible, but it was their compassion and support that we'll never forget. Our little girl is gone, but will never be forgotten. On another note: her best friend, who was the other girl who took the ecstasy, survived, which we are thankful that she is OK, and that we love her too. Ecstasy is what it is. We hope other children realize that it is dangerous and not to try it.

- Guy Buehler and Angie Eyre

P.S.: We want to talk about this and get the story out. We do not want to go bump in the night. We may be in mourning but we do not want any other parents to go through this.
