SAINT GEORGES DE BEAUCE, Que. –- Two people in Quebec were killed early Sunday morning after an out-of-control vehicle crashed into the bedroom of their apartment as they slept.
The accident occurred in the small town of Saint Georges de Beauce, about 100 km south-east of Quebec City.
A local police spokesman, Mario Thiboutot, said it was clear the the victims, Louis Vaillancourt, 53, a well-known salesperson at a local Mazda dealership, and Marie Faucher, 55, who had been asleep together in bed, were already dead when authorities arrived at the scene sometime after 4:20 am.
The 17-year-old driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital in Quebec City with life-threatening injuries.
After slamming into the building, the Mazda vehicle tore through the victims’ bedroom, living room and a hallway, before coming to a stop in the living room of an 80-year-old neighbour, who luckily emerged unharmed.
Police said speeding was likely a factor in the incident, as there was only a slight bend in the road outside and the speed limit in the area was 50 km/h.
About a dozen residents from the building’s eight apartments were temporarily moved to a nearby seniors home. The Red Cross will provide care until they are able to find accommodation with family or at motels.
