More Canadians plan flu shots, says poll

TORONTO — A new poll suggests a majority of Canadians are either planning to get vaccinated against H1N1 or have already done so.

Forty-nine per cent of respondents to the latest Canadian Press Harris-Decima poll said they intend to get the swine-flu shot, while six per cent said they already have.

Just over a third, or 36 per cent, of respondents said they don’t intend to get inoculated, compared with 50 per cent in early October.

Twenty per cent of those surveyed said they were very concerned about swine flu, while 35 per cent reported being somewhat concerned.

A similar poll conducted last month found that just 36 per cent of respondents were concerned about the pandemic threat.

The poll surveyed 1,000 Canadians by phone between Oct. 29 and Nov. 1 and carries a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

“As the H1N1 situation has unfolded, it is clear that Canadians have become much more engaged and opinions and intentions are changing,” Harris-Decima senior vice-president Bruce Anderson said in a release.

“Canadians are far more likely to say they see the situation as more serious now, rather than less serious, compared to how they felt was a week or two ago.”
