$50-million windfall
Lucky lotto ticket sold in Manitoba

WINNIPEG - One lucky person, presumably a Manitoban, has won $50 million in the second-largest lottery prize ever awarded in Canada.

A single ticket, sold in Manitoba, is the winner of Friday's $50 million Lotto Max jackpot. In 2005, 17 oil and gas workers in Alberta won a record $54.3-million Lotto 6-49 jackpot.

LUXURY CAR, HOME

That kind of money could buy a lot of things. For example, if the lucky Lotto Max ticket-holder is interested in a new vehicle, he or she might want to drop by Auto Haus Volkswagen and Porsche at 660 Pembina Hwy. and take the 2010 Porsche Panamera 4S for a test drive.

The dealership currently has four of the cars, which sell for $158,810, in stock.

The Panamera is loaded with the latest features but is not your typical sports car -- it's actually a four-door sedan.

"It's the first time ever Porsche has come out with something like that," said sales manager Kirk Cancilla. "It's beautiful. These will sell really fast."

If the big lotto winner is looking to spend some of his or her money on a ritzy new home, there's plenty available. The most expensive home on the Winnipeg market is going for $2.8 million.

The 9,000-sq.-ft. mansion at 761 Wellington Cres. is situated along the Assiniboine River and boasts a seven-car heated garage.

Gary Bachman of Century 21 Bachman and Associates said the house has actually dropped in price. It was listed at $3.35 million last February.

"The taxes there are like 48,000 a year," he said. "That's one of the reasons why it's sitting."

For the tax-conscious multimillionaire, he recommends a 4,700-sq.-ft. home at 1330 Kelburn Rd. in St. Norbert, selling for $1.25 million. The home sits on a 17.6-acre lot that overlooks the Red River, boasts an in-ground swimming pool complete with waterfall and is surrounded by a custom stone fence.

"It's a beauty of a house," said Bachman. "It's a real retreat. It's like a country estate. It's where you'd want to go if you had $50 million. You wouldn't want to be right downtown."

Or, if you've got $50 million and swanky just isn't your style, you could buy 6,361,323 six-packs of Lucky Lager at Manitoba Liquor Marts.

The winning numbers in Friday's Lotto Max draw were 2, 7, 8, 11, 16, 17 and 18. The bonus number was 12.
