CALGARY — The flag-draped coffin of a Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan has been carried into a Calgary church by an honour guard.
The casket arrived at the church in a hearse led by a police motorcade.
Sapper Steven Marshall, who was 24, died Oct. 30 when an improvised explosive device went off while he was on foot patrol southwest of Kandahar city.
Marshall’s commanding officer says the funeral is especially poignant because it comes just a day before Remembrance Day.
Lt.-Col. Mark Flint says the service is a stark reminder that Canadians are fighting overseas for what they believe in.
Marshall’s family isn’t appearing publicly, but said in a statement last week that he was a “soldier’s soldier,” who died doing what he loved.
