The man responsible for a sickening sex attack on an elderly woman has been ordered deported from Canada.
Rex Okumu is currently serving a five-year jail term following a 2006 conviction for sexually assaulting a nursing home resident at a northwest care facility where he worked.
The victim was 91.
The 45-year-old was ordered deported on the basis of serious criminality, immigration and refugee board spokeswoman Paula Faber said.
Okumu, who is from the Sudan, is currently in custody pending deportation proceedings.
At a recent hearing he was detained because he is deemed a danger to the public, especially the elderly or children.
In handing down his sentence, Justice Scott Brooker blasted Okumu for preying on a defenceless senior while in a position of caring for them.
Even though evidence was unclear on whether Okumu was actually having intercourse with the victim when he was caught by a co-worker with his pants down and standing between the legs of the elderly woman, court concluded it was nonetheless a serious assault.
Brooker said the sentence had to convey a message that such crimes will not be tolerated.
"My sentence must provide a significant deterrence to Mr. Okumu and anybody else who might consider perpetrating such a despicable crime," Brooker said in court.
"The victim suffered from dementia and was completely at his mercy."
