WINNIPEG - A 16-year-old boy rescued his grandmother and firefighters saved a third person from a burning home on a northern Manitoba reserve early yesterday.

The blaze occurred at a home on Norway House Cree Nation and was reported at 5:30 a.m., RCMP said.

When officers arrived, half the house was engulfed in flames and smoke. An elderly woman who has medical concerns was helped out of the house by her grandson but a man remained trapped inside, RCMP said. Officers tried to enter the house but couldn't because of thick, choking smoke, a media release stated.

Norway House's fire department arrived shortly afterward and began to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters entered the home and rescued a 25-year-old man, RCMP said.

The man was flown to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, where he was in stable condition yesterday, police said.

The boy and grandma were treated at the scene by paramedics, RCMP said.

Police said the cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.

Norway House is about 920 km north of Winnipeg.
