Winnipeg police have arrested a fugitive who allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend at close range last month, resulting in the woman losing part of her arm.

Jared James Smoke, 22, surrendered to RCMP in Portage la Prairie on Sunday. He's charged with attempted murder.

Smoke was wanted on a warrant, which was issued shortly after the Oct. 21 shooting.

"It's just an absolute horrific event. The injuries to the female were and are serious," said police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen, adding she could have been killed.

The woman was badly wounded when she raised her arm to shield her face from a shotgun blast, sources said previously.

Her arm absorbed most of the blast but she also suffered injuries to her head, sources said.

She's out of hospital but continues to receive medical care, police said.

The shooting happened in an apartment at 300 Furby St. The woman's young daughters were in the suite at the time, a neighbour said previously.

The victim and suspect were dating but the woman was ending the relationship, the neighbour said.

Michalyshen said the suspect became upset after an argument, so he retrieved a gun.

In addition to attempted murder, Smoke is charged with two counts each of possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of a firearm while prohibited, and single counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and breach of probation.

He's banned from possessing firearms and other weapons due to previous convictions, court records state.
