Prisoner badly beaten at Manitoba jail
By QMI Agency

A 33-year-old man is in critical but stable condition in a Winnipeg hospital after he was beaten by a mob of inmates at a rural Manitoba correctional centre Monday afternoon, RCMP say.

The violent attack happened at the Milner Ridge Correctional Centre, a

minimum- and medium-security facility just off Provincial Road 214 in the Agassiz Provincial Forest between Lac du Bonnet and Beausejour.

About eight inmates ganged up on the victim, who is a fellow inmate, RCMP said.

As a result, the provincial facility¹s medium-security unit is locked down while the RCMP investigate. The duration of the lockdown depends on the length of the investigation, the province said.

The man, whose name wasn¹t released, suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

As of Tuesday morning, no one has been arrested or charged, RCMP said.

The investigation continues.

Police described the incident as an aggravated assault and didn¹t say if any weapons were involved.

Milner Ridge, which expanded a few years ago to include a medium-security unit, has a rated capacity of 284.

At the time of Monday¹s assault, it housed 284 adult male inmates ‹ a mix of remanded and sentenced inmates, a spokesman for Manitoba Justice said.

The property was once North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) radar base.

The province bought it for $1 in 1988 and converted it into a minimum-security prison
