Shilo mourns its own
By QMI Agency
The Winnipeg Sun

It will be a sombre start to 2010 at CFB Shilo as the base mourns one of four Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan Wednesday.

Pte. Garrett Chidley, 21, called the western Manitoba base home.

He was one of five Canadians killed in an explosion while on patrol in Kandahar city.

It was the first tour of duty overseas for the young private, who was based at CFB Shilo as part of the Second Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

"Private Chidley was a dedicated soldier and a loyal friend. He was a motivated and proud soldier who will truly be missed. This is a sad day for the Battalion and the Regiment," read an official statement released by Shilo command yesterday afternoon.

"Our main effort at this time is focused on looking after his family as they deal with their tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends here in Shilo and Langley, British Columbia."

Three other Canadian soldiers and a Calgary Herald reporter were also killed during Wednesday's explosion.
