Winnipeggers fear for relatives in Haiti
By Sean Ledwich, Special to QMI Agency

Winnipeggers with relatives in Haiti have been unable to get hold of them after Tuesday's 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

Anne Rose Orelien has tried repeatedly to reach her seven siblings since Tuesday. Through tears, she explained that many of them live in Carrefour, the earthquake epicentre. Orelien has been anxiously watching television reports showing widespread destruction. If all of her relatives were brought to Winnipeg, she said, it would fill the city.

Garden City Collegiate teacher Jean-Joseph Ismé, who left Haiti since 1975, also has family in Carrefour that he can't reach. He has four sisters living there, along with nieces and nephews.

Canadians trying to find out about friends and relatives in Haiti can call Foreign Affairs at 1-800-387-3124.

By midday Tuesday, the Mennonite Central Committee said Manitobans made $6,000 in online donations for their Haitian relief efforts. To donate go to www.mcc.org or call 261-6381.
