Cops' message not getting through
By Chris Doucette, Toronto Sun

TORONTO -- But many people don’t seem to be hearing the warnings and the body count continues to rise.a

“I’m sure some people are hearing our message, but there are others who just don’t seem to be listening,” said Toronto Police Sgt. Tim Burrows. “Maybe we need to be louder.”

In the last 13 days, 10 people have been killed and one left clinging to life, all because of accidents Burrows believes were “preventable.”

Jaywalking and crossing the street while talking on the phone are two of the many things police have been cautioning people about in an effort to stem the carnage.

“Some people seem to be walking around with a sense of invincibility, while many others just aren’t using common sense,” Burrows said.

Many recent accidents have involved pedestrians running to catch a bus or streetcar, often jaywalking or crossing an intersection against the traffic light. “Don’t do it,” TTC spokesman Brad Ross urged. “Another bus (or streetcar) will come along soon enough.”

During rush-hour, the next bus or streetcar will be by in three to five minutes, he said. “It’s just not worth losing your life over.”
