Two skiers have fallen to their deaths and one is injured after reportedly skiing out of bounds at Revelstoke Mountain Resort in British Columbia on Friday, RCMP report.
Local radio reported that the three skiiers left the developed area of the resort, west of Banff, and skied into a steep, icy chute. Police say they took off their skis to try to climb out, but slid off a cliff in the attempt.
Search and rescue teams are attempting to recover the bodies of an adult male and a teenage male. The third skier a teenage male is recovering in hospital with a badly bruised ankle, according to radio reports.
All three are from Grimsby, Ont. No names have been released.
Just last week, the RCMP in B.C. voiced their exasperation after a series of incidents where they were required to rescue out-of-bound skiers.
A 31-year-old Swede skied outside the boundaries last Tuesday at Revelstoke and narrowly avoided plummeting down a 33-metre cliff.
He was plucked off the ledge by a helicopter crewed by Revelstoke Search and Rescue and taken to a local hospital where he was treated for minor chest injuries.
That was on the heels of another lucky escape by a snowboarder who went out-of-bounds and managed to walk out of the snowy wilderness after being missing for nearly nine hours.
Days earlier, a pair of skiers spent two nights lost on the mountain before being rescued by emergency crews.
"There's been numerous rescues this year...sooner or later, itıs going to end in tragedy," Cpl. Rod Wiebe of Revelstoke RCMP said.
