WINNIPEG -- A pilot was forced to walk several kilometres to get help for an injured passenger after their small plane crashed in bad weather on Lake Winnipeg Saturday afternoon.
RCMP said the male pilot and his adult male passenger, who are both from Manigotagan, left from Mantago Bay on the east side of Lake Winnipeg in a single-engine private plane during mid-afternoon Saturday.
The pair encountered bad weather shortly after takeoff and the pilot attempted to turn back to Mantago Bay but crashed onto the frozen lake.
RCMP said the pilot left the injured passenger in the plane while he walked about seven kilometres back to Mantago Bay where he notified RCMP and local emergency medical personnel of the crash.
With help from area residents with snowmobiles, the passenger was rescued from the crash site. Both the pilot and passenger were transported to Pine Falls Hospital where they remained Sunday with non-life threatening injuries. The Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
MAJOR PLOWING ROLLS ON
The city's major plowing operation continued Sunday as snow continued to fall.
The truck plowing operation started Saturday night and continued Sunday on main roads, bus routes and collector streets. Sanding trucks also hit the streets to improve traction at intersections across the city as several centimetres more snow fell and drifted Sunday. Sidewalks along main routes were also being cleared.
Plowing of back lanes will commence Monday at 7 a.m. and will continue until completed. Motorists should remember the city's overnight parking ban remains in full effect on Snow Routes between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.
Under the annual ban, which will remain in effect until March 1, vehicles parked during those hours on Snow Routes are subject to be ticketed or towed.
Up-to-date information on the overnight parking ban can be found on the city's website at http://winnipeg.ca/publicworks/ParkingBans or by calling the Snow Information line at 775-SNOW (7669).
CARJACKED VEHICLE FOUND
Winnipeg Police have recovered a Chevrolet Cobalt stolen from a couple at gunpoint by thugs early Saturday but continue to look for the suspects.
The carjacking occurred in the Brooklands area of the city at the rear of a home in the 100 block of Keewatin Street about 1 a.m. Two males, one carrying a gun, approached and ordered the 23-year-old woman and 21-year-old man out of the car.
The victims were not injured. The suspects then sped away in the vehicle. It was recovered at the corner of McPhillips and Logan early Sunday morning, Winnipeg Police said.
Police continue to look for a man in his early 20s, aboriginal in appearance, with a medium build.
The second suspect is described only as aboriginal in appearance.
