CALGARY -- One man was shot after officers opened fire during a traffic stop Monday morning, confirmed the Calgary Police Service.

Insp. Darren Cave said police were conducting a traffic stop in the community of McKenzie Lake round 3 a.m when the driver of the vehicle struck one of the officers with his car.

At that point the officer opened fire, wounding the man, said Cave.

Police then lost sight of the vehicle, began searching for footprints in the snow and discovered the man hiding, Cave said.

The suspect is now in custody in hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The two officers were also taken to hospital.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates whenever officers discharge their weapons, is now investigating.
