Toronto members of Global Medic are heading to Chile to help victims of the earthquake-ravaged country.
On Saturday, a 8.8-magnitude quake killed 300 people and ruined homes, hospitals and bridges.
“We are working on trying to source out flights, but the problem is there are closed airports in Chile,” Global Medic member Matthew Capobianco said Sunday afternoon.
“We are trying to get two or three volunteers to go down to work with ADRA, which is the same relief organization we are working with in Haiti.”
Global Medic will take 10 water purification units with them to Chile.
“We will train the people down there how to install and use them and then hand over the operation to them to run.”
Global Medic will also determine if its members are needed to bring equipment needed to set up a field hospital.
“We will see what the infrastructure is like. If the infrastructure is not needed, we will put that on hold.
The local members on this trip will likely stay for 10 days.
In Haiti, Global Medic had a presence since the second day of the disaster and has rotated more than 20 people through the country.
