A Detroit Red Wings fan, an avid athlete and an “incredible” husband and father.
That’s how family and friends remembered Garth Radons, the 39-year-old slain Great West Chrysler Jeep employee, during a sombre memorial service Saturday.
“Each and every one of us wishes we had the chance to save you,” said Bart Yachimec, owner of Great West Chrysler Jeep, near 178 Street and Stony Plain Road, as he broke down in tears and sobbed.
Radons was gunned down on March 12, when disgruntled supervisor Dave Burns entered the workplace with a sawed-off shotgun and opened fire on Radons and Mike Dymichowsky and then turned the gun on himself.
Model cars, photos, flowers and sports items lined the front of the inside of the church as hundreds of mourners came by the West Meadows Baptist Church at 9333 199 St. to say their final farewells.
“When he laughed, you knew he was there. He had a very unmistakable laugh. It was so contagious,” said Yachimec, reading from one of the letters from a fellow employee of Radons.
Radons had been working for Chrysler since he was 16 years old.
“He was not just a boss but a friend,” said co-worker Glen Crawford.
The subtle sobs of his daughter Alexandra Tumac could be heard throughout the church as a five-minute photo tribute of Radons and Alexandra played overhead.
Radons was described as a very dedicated father who spent much of his time with his daughter.
He married his high school sweetheart, Angela Tumac.
Now a member of the Edmonton Police Service, Tumac was one of the first officers on the scene of the shooting, discovering her husband dead.
Edmonton police officers lined the front of the church to lend support to one of their own who lost her husband in the tragic shooting.
“No one was exempt from his humour,” said Radons’s sister, who described her brother as a “chick magnet.”
Another memorial service will be held for Radons in Regina on Saturday, March 27.
Donations can be made to Alexandra Tumac at any TD Canada Trust Bank throughout the city.
The other victim of the shooting, Dymichowsky, remains in hospital, but according to dealership general manager Dennis Ward, is showing signs of improvement.
