Fallen Canadian soldier remembered
By LINDA HOANG, QMI Agency

Sgt. Martin Goudreault (HO)

EDMONTON - Tributes are pouring in for an Edmonton-based soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Martin Goudreault, 35, was killed Sunday morning after an improvised explosive device detonated during a foot patrol in the Panjwayi District, about 15 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City.

“I will miss your jokes and your infectious smile,” Lana Goguen writes on the Facebook group “R.I.P. Sergeant Martin Goudreault.”

“He truly is a great guy that will never be forgotten.”

“Thank you for your service and sacrifice,” writes group creator Heather Auger.

“A fallen Canadian Hero. Grieved and cried for your loss,” says another post by Diane Carrier.

Family of Goudreault, from Sudbury, Ont., declined to comment late Monday, but said they were preparing a statement that would be released through the Canadian Forces.

Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean said his death was a “cruel reminder” of the dangers Canadian troops face.

“We admire them all the more as their sense of duty compels them to answer their country’s call with valour, determination and incredible generosity,” she said in a statement Monday morning.

Minister of National Defence Peter MacKay also extended his sympathy to Goudreault’s friends, family and fellow soldiers.

“Sgt. Martin Goudreault served to help build a safe and stable future for Afghans, and he did so with honour and pride. This tragic loss is another example of the daily risks faced by the men and women of the Canadian Forces,” the statement said. “Sgt. Martin Goudreault’s sacrifice will not be forgotten and it will not deter us from continuing to help Afghans rebuild their country.”

Goudreault died on Canadian Forces Day, also known as D-Day, when those involved in the Canadian Forces are honoured on the first Sunday of June each year.

He is the 147th member of the Canadian military to die since the mission in Afghanistan began in 2002.
