MONTREAL – A man allegedly tried to steal $800 from a Western Union outlet north of Montreal, but it might only be a matter of time before the suspect is caught. He ran away empty-handed, but left behind a fake driver’s licence with his real photograph, police said.
The suspect walked into the money-transfer outlet in Laval, north of Montreal, on June 1.
Police allege he filled out forms to pick up $800 and submitted the bogus photo ID to a woman behind the counter.
She went into a back room, checked out the ID and immediately suspected it was fake because the signature on the card was different from the one on the form.
When she returned to the front, the man was gone.
She called police, who say they determined that while the card was indeed a fake, the photo matched the employee’s description of the suspect.
The ID was displayed prominently in a Montreal newspaper on Friday and police are actively searching for him
