$3,200 cognac hits Canadian market
By MICHEL MUNGER, QMI Agency

MONTREAL - Celebrated French cognac distiller Courvoisier will make 50 bottles of new $3,200 luxury liquor available to Canadian consumers.

L’Essence de Courvoisier comes in a special decanter developed in partnership with Baccarat, a crystal design company.

The director of quality liquor control for the company told QMI Agency the product evokes Courvoisier’s imperial history – Napoleon reportedly enjoyed their cognac.

“Napoleon created 10 magnificent rings to reward bravery in his officers,” Pierre Szersnovicz said. “We used the idea to create the carafe. We found one of the rings and replicated it for the stopper on the bottle.”

L’Essence will not be available in limited quantities, unlike the company’s other high-price cognac, L’Esprit de Courvoisier.

“It will make it into the market in greater quantities over the years,” Szernovicz said. “It will be a crescendo."

He said the new cognac incorporates aromas of sandalwood, cigar and dried fruit.

But at over three grand a bottle, Szersnovicz admits the market will be limited.

“There will be connoisseurs who will rush out to buy it without looking at the price,” he said.
