Canoeist found dead in St. Lawrence River
By QMI Agency

GANANOQUE, Ont. – Ontario police discovered the body of a missing canoeist in the St. Lawrence River Saturday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police officers are not releasing the name of the man, whom they described as middle-aged and possibly from the U.S., until they locate next-of-kin, said Sgt. Chris Watkins.

The victim's family reported him missing Friday afternoon, said Watkins, adding he was canoeing in the Thousand Islands near Gananoque, Ont.

The man's canoe washed ashore later Friday in the town, added Watkins.

The search continued Saturday morning, with the help of a helicopter, until the man's body was located around 11 a.m., near the area where he initially went missing, said Watkins.

Police believe the man was staying at a cottage in the area.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine cause of death.
