Cops seek missing B.C. senior
By CANDICE WARD, QMI Agency

Jasper, Alberta and Kamloops, B.C. RCMP are searching for 81-year-old May Milling who went missing on a car trip from Jasper Alberta to Kamloops, B.C. (Handout)

EDMONTON – The friend of a missing senior last seen leaving Jasper fears the worst.

May Milling, 81, was reported missing Wednesday after she left Jasper in her blue 2009 Buick Lucerne, heading for Kamloops, but she never arrived.

Mounties do not suspect foul play.

"The more days that go by the more you worry she will not be found alive," said Dorothy Asuma, friend and roommate of Milling.

Asuma said Milling -- who lives in Gibsons, B.C. -- makes the trip through the Rockies annually, usually alone. It is unusual for her not to check in, she said.

"She takes no chances, she is an extremely careful person," said Asuma.

"That is what makes it so bizarre."

She last checked in with Asuma on Monday, to tell how much it was raining.

Asuma said Milling does have a heart condition and it does require medication, but she had enough for the duration of the trip.

Milling had left Gibsons on Aug. 26 and headed to Grand Forks, Radium, Banff and then on to Jasper.

She was last seen Wednesday morning around 8:15 a.m. in Jasper when she said goodbye to some friends as Jober's Cottage, a bed and breakfast she has been frequenting for the last 10 years.

"She was in good spirits and her car was gassed up," said Gerry Jober, owner of Jober's Cottage.

Milling was on her way to visit a friend in Kamloops and then planned to head back home to Gibsons, according to Jober.

RCMP have not been able to locate her vehicle, even though it is equipped with OnStar.

Sgt. Patrick Webb, spokesperson for the Alberta RCMP, said cops have been unable to get a signal from Milling's OnStar or her cellphone.

"We have gone past the electronic tracking, we are now onto the physical search," said Webb.

That includes a ground and aerial search of the highway between Jasper and Kamloops.

Webb said this can be a difficult area to search due to the vast distance between communities and the rugged terrain.

Milling's four-door sedan has a B.C. licence plate 147 LHF.

This is not the first time a senior has gone missing in this area this year.

Lyle and Marie McCann were last seen July 3 before embarking on a road trip to B.C. to visit relatives.

Their motorhome was found torched at a campground southeast of Edson and their vehicle was later located at the end of a rough road near Carrot Creek. But they are yet to be located.

"We still have a large number of investigators working on it," said Webb.
