EDMONTON - A woman who died in a crash Monday in the city's west end was a bright, young student who had a promising future, say students and staff at the University of Alberta.
Laura Chee, 23, was a passenger in a Honda Civic, which was hit when a 2000 Jeep allegedly blew through a yellow light and slammed into the vehicle shortly before 7:30 p.m. She died in hospital late Monday night.
A 26-year-old driver of the Jeep was charged with impaired driving causing death.
Students say Chee was a second-year pharmacy student who was also employed part-time at a Shopper's Drug Mart in the city's north end.
"(Chee) was such a tremendous person and her death will affect all of us," said Tyler Watson, president of the Alberta Pharmacy Students' Association at the university.
"Laura was a great person. All of us are still grieving and in shock."
James Kehrer, the dean of pharmacy at the U of A, says Chee was a young, hard-working student.
"She had a passion for her profession," said Keher.
Chee's family declined to comment about the tragedy and asked for their privacy.
Funeral services will be held this weekend.
A spokeswoman with the university said flags will also be flown at half-mast on campus and Watson says plans are already underway to hold a public memorial for Chee on campus.
Grief counsellors will also be available for staff and students who are having a hard time coping with Chee's tragic death, said Kehrer.
A memorial at the intersection on Wednesday included six bouquets of flowers and four stuffed animals.
Police say traffic cops the Jeep's driver provided two breath samples. Both tests were more than double the legal limit, police said.
Witnesses also told traffic cops the Jeep was driving erratically moments before the fatal crash, police said.
