CALGARY - The lawyer for a local woman who split with her common-law husband failed to adequately identify his assets, a $14-million lawsuit claims.

Renee Prpick White says she is out at least $3 million in property she should have received when she split with Antonio Piattelli.

And her statement of claim also seeks general damages of $10.5 million for pain, emotional trauma and lost business opportunity, as well as a $500,000 punitive award.

White's statement of claim, a copy of which was obtained Tuesday by QMI Agency, says matrimonial lawyer Kate Wood and her lawfirm failed to properly represent her.

Wood breached her duties, in part, by "failing to fully investigate Piattelli's assets and all issues regarding the appropriate valuation of assets," the legal action claims.

"As a result of the defendant lawyer's breach of contract and negligence, this has resulted in the plaintiff receiving substantially less property than she should have received."

It says Wood helped negotiate a separation and property agreement between White and Piattelli, dated Aug. 27, 2010.

White's claim says she has since had to hire new counsel in order to get the agreement struck.

Among the consequences of the breach is White has suffered "emotional trauma" and psychological expenses, the lawsuit states.

Stress has also prevented her from conducting business and professional services, it says.

A statement of defence disputing the unproven allegations hasn't been filed.
