Cherry repeats pledge to decline RMC honour
By BRIAN GRAY, QMI AGENCY

Cherry sticks with decision to pass on degree

Don Cherry declines honorary degree

TORONTO - The Toronto Sun made a guest appearance in the Coach’s Corner Saturday night.

At the top of the weekly Hockey Night in Canada first-intermission segment, host Ron MacLean held up the front page of the paper featuring the exclusive story that Don Cherry would decline an honorary degree from the Royal Military College in Kingston after a controversy erupted among faculty.

“This is your little battle but I honestly think, Don, you should go,” MacLean said, pleading with Grapes to change his mind in part because Cherry’s mother and grandfather both worked at RMC. “I don’t care who said what, you ought to go and get your doctorate.”

Cherry repeated that he didn’t want to detract from the occasion for the other two men receiving honorary degrees, Brig.-Gen. John Cadieux and Lt.-Col. John Desmond Gibson. “I’m not going. It’s not fair to the other two guys, it’d be a circus down there. I’m sorry I can’t be there (for the graduating 800 cadets).”

Cherry concluded by saying that would be the last he would say on the issue.

“Joe Warmington did a good job and I didn’t want to talk on it all. I love the RMC but that’s it.”
