Still no sign of missing Arctic mayor
Vanished after hunting trip
By QMI Agency

The search is still on for the missing mayor of Kimmirut, Nunavut, last seen over a week ago when he went caribou hunting and didn't return.

Mayor Jamesie Kootoo has been missing since Nov. 26, and blizzard conditions hampered the search for the first few days after his disappearance.

"Search and rescue groups are still actively searching for Mr, Kootoo. They are still hopeful," said RCMP Cpl. Dennis Lambe.

Volunteer searchers thought they'd made headway last week when they spotted a flash of light near the area the mayor was last seen, but ground searches since then have yielded no clues.

Snow, high winds and the rough terrain continue to plague the rescue team. Several snow machines have broken down due to the harsh conditions, and the team is now seeking donations of cash, fuel or snow machine parts.

"They are concentrating in one area where he could have gone and gotten stuck or run out of gas," Sgt. Jimmy Akavak told Nunatsiaq News. "It could be anything up there and the committee says they are not going stop until they know what happened for sure."
