OTTAWA — A 19-year-old woman feels she was a “hostage” on an OC Transpo bus early Thursday after asking a run-of-the-mill question to the driver.
Vicky Murray said she was on a bus just after midnight when she approached the driver to ask which direction he would be taking, since it wasn’t her regular bus.
Murray said “he mumbled something” and she didn’t hear it, and according to her, he said, “Do you really want me to repeat myself?”
“I think he misunderstood the fact I misheard him,” Murray said in an interview later in the day.
Murray claims the driver told her to get off the bus, even though it wasn’t at her stop. In fact, it wasn’t a stop, period.
Murray said the bus pulled up to the next stop but the driver then wouldn’t let her off.
“I wasn’t looking for confrontation when I was so close to home,” Murray said.
Murray said she paced the bus and called Ottawa police, while thinking she felt like a “hostage.”
There was one other passenger on the bus.
Murray was let off about 15 minutes later when transit special constables arrived. A transit supervisor drove her home.
She e-mailed a complaint to Transpo later.
A Transpo spokeswoman said officials are investigating the allegations and will take appropriate action if necessary. The transit department doesn’t discuss disciplinary measures.
“Nothing is going to be done unless I make a big stink,” Murray said.
“I don’t want a meaningless apology. I want them to take it more seriously.”
