TORONTO - A young woman died after tumbling out of a moving vehicle and was run over by a truck on the Gardiner Expressway near Toronto's CNE early Monday.

But it's unclear if the 19-year-old fell, jumped or was pushed from the car.

She was sitting in the passenger seat of an eastbound Toyota Corolla driven by a 20-year-old woman when the incident occurred at 2:34 a.m., Toronto Police said.

"For reasons that are yet to be determined, she somehow came out of the vehicle and was subsequently struck by the eastbound five-tonne International truck," Const. Clint Stibbe said Monday.

The victim was rushed to a nearby trauma centre, where she succumbed to her injuries about six hours later.

Police have spoken to the teen's family, but her name is not being released yet, Stibbe said.

Both the Toyota and the truck stopped and remained at the scene, he said.

No charges had been laid as of Monday afternoon.

The eastbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway were shut down for several hours as police investigated.

Collision reconstruction officers from traffic services are trying determine exactly what happened, Stibbe said.

He said police are anxious to talk to any witnesses who haven't come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Traffic Services at 416ˆ'808ˆ'1900, or Crime Stoppers at 416ˆ'222ˆ'TIPS (8477).
