It's been two years since Haiti was devastated by an earthquake, and while the country may not be on our radars, one Canadian aid agency continues to help Haitians rebuild their lives.

Dr. Aslam Daud, the chairman of Humanity First Canada, returned from the country Monday after reviewing the agency's post-earthquake projects.

"Haitian people are still recovering from the effects of earthquake of 2010. I saw large communities still living in tents and poverty is rampant," Daud said in a press release. "Our focus is now to rebuild communities to make them self-sufficient. We plan to work on educating the community and provide much needed health care to give them a promise of good future."

Daud visited Seguin - where the organization is building a school - and Jacmel, as well as a local orphanage and a hospital for abandoned children.

The school hasn't been completed but around 170 students are already attending classes in a temporary makeshift structure.

"The school students and staff gave us the warmest welcome and are extremely excited watching their very own school nearing completion," Daud says. "The local population has renewed hopes for their future and is dreaming for a better life."

Daud also met with other non-governmental organizations working in Haiti to explore other projects such as providing clean water and building low cost homes for homeless.

Humanity First is a non-political, non-sectarian relief and development agency that works with communities around the globe to improve the lives of some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people.
