Rippers name to stay in London
By QMI Agency
LONDON, ONT. - The London Rippers are in London, Ont., to stay, despite city council urging the team to change its name and logo.
Last fall, council asked the team to reconsider its name because of its association with the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper, who preyed on vulnerable women.
The team logo features a sinister-looking cloaked cartoon character wearing a top hat and holding a baseball bat.
As the new professional baseball team prepares to open its inaugural season May 25, team president David Martin said in a letter to city hall the name has proven popular and he has no plans to change.
“We bring you the Rippers,” he wrote.
As the city signed a lease with the team before it adopted its name, council could only grumble about the team’s decision this week.
“I don’t really see there is much we can do. The controversy over the name is unfortunate, but we are stuck,” Coun. Bill Armstrong said.
