OTTAWA - A man who posted gory videos of himself slashing his penis with a utility knife on YouTube and sent the links to his ex-wife was sentenced to 18 months in jail Thursday.
Jason Gardiner, 34, pleaded guilty in March to criminally harassing his ex-wife and former mother-in-law, threatening to kill his former step-children and breaching orders not to contact the woman in December 2011 and January 2012.
It's the fourth time he's been before the courts for offences against the woman. He also abused his previous partner.
"If you want to say you're the victim, that's not going to work before me," said Judge Heather Perkins-McVey, who noted Gardiner has borderline personality disorder and not a full-fledged mental illness.
"That is part of who you are."
His motive for making the videos was cruelty, court heard.
"These videos were made by you and posted by you because you wanted (your ex-wife) to watch them," Perkins-McVey said. "You believed she was responsible for your emotional pain and you wanted her to watch the videos and feel guilty and responsible."
In the most disturbing of three dozen videos, Gardiner points the camera at his penis and asks, "Should we chop you off? I think we should."
He draws blood from his penis, then the camera pans to blood dripping from cuts all over his chest, stomach, arms and thighs onto the bathroom floor.
"Mommy, no, it hurts," he moans in another video as he cuts himself.
Gardiner said just listening - he couldn't watch at his guilty plea - was "horrific" and he feels bad people in court had to see. But he showed no remorse for his ex-wife.
"That was just an expression of the internal pain and the turmoil I'm in," he said. "No one cares."
He has 15 months left to serve after credit for pre-sentence custody.
