A Canadian tourist who died in Vietnam last Thursday may have been "drinking too much wine," a police official is quoted as saying in a Vietnamese newspaper.

Cathy Huynh, 26, a Canadian citizen of Vietnamese origin, went into shock on Wednesday and died after sufferering cardiac arrest early Thursday morning.

Huynh had taken Karin Joy Bowerman, a 27-year-old American woman, to the Khanh Hoa Province Hospital on July 30 where Bowerman died later that night after suffering from respiratory failure, the Tuoi Ttre News website reported.

The two women had shared a hotel room in the beachside city of Nha Trang.

"A forensic investigator of Khanh Hoa province’s police department, who declined to be named, believes that drinking too much wine might have led to the deaths of the two foreign visitors to Nha Trang, who have recently died mysteriously at a local public hospital," the site said Sunday. "He said he will inform Tuoi Tre News of the real cause of their deaths as soon as they have the official results of the autopsy tests but he did not say how long it will take."

The news site says that Cathy's mother, Huynh Thi Huong, who arrived in Vietnam on Saturday, insisted that her daughter does not have a habit of drinking.

“She often drank a little at parties but she never consumed beer or wine during vacations,” Huong is quoted as saying.

Tuoi Trei News says an employee at the morgue of the Khanh Hoa General Hospital told the paper that Huynh's body was "sent there without any clothes on, with just a piece of fabric pulled over.

"When Tuoi Tre News told him that the victim’s family want her to have clothes on, Tap said that the morgue would not supply clothes but he would ask the hospital’s leaders to provide a pair for her or he would buy one himself because 'this is humane.'"

The site says Huynh’s family have refused to have an autopsy done on their daughter since Cathy and Bowerman "died the same way and one autopsy would be enough."
