Bomb found at tennis court
By QMI Agency

The city of St. John's closed its outdoor rec facilities Monday after police discovered a pipe bomb on a tennis court.

Cops said they received a report of a "suspicious object" at Wedgewood Park around 10:30 a.m.

Bomb technicians confirmed it was a pipe bomb and used X-ray and a bomb-retrieval robot to remove it. It was examined and destroyed.

City staff discovered the device during their routine safety check of the morning. After police arrived, the city shut down the rec centre and conducted a secondary check of all indoor and outdoor facilities.

The city issued a statement Monday evening saying its staff had "followed all safety protocols" and were assured by police "there was no danger to individuals inside the facility at any time."

Police said no injuries or property damage was reported, and their investigation continues.

The rec centre reopened Tuesday.
