LISTOWEL — Four people from the Toronto area, one teenager and three in their 20s, are dead following a plane crash just northeast of Listowel Friday night.
Wellington County OPP said the pilot was Marko Misic, 20, of Toronto.
The three passengers were Mohammed Shahnawaz Zia, 23, of Toronto; Wasay Rizwan, 27, of Toronto; and Victoria Margaret Luk, 19, of Mississauga.
On Friday just after 8:30 p.m.police responded to a the report of a possible plane crash in rural Ontario, about 20 kilometres northwest of Listowel and just south of the small community of Moorefield.
Firefighters from Mapleton Fire Department and Paramedics from Guelph-Wellington EMS also responded to the scene.
The search was aided by information from Marine Search and Rescue at RCC Trenton which reported that a single engine Cessna aircraft had disappeared off radar and an Emergency Transponder Signal had been activated.
Members of the West Region OPP Emergency Response Team and Canine Unit were called to the scene to assist with a ground search.
Just after 10 p.m., the aircraft was located in a cornfield and all four passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. The bodies were transported to Hamilton General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Investigators from the Transportation Safety Bureau as well as the coroner were at the site of the crash Saturday and were assisted by members of the County of Wellington O.P.P. Crime Unit and the West Region OPP Technical Identification Services Unit.
According to police, the aircraft was rented from the Waterloo Flight Centre and departed the Breslau (Waterloo) Airport at 6:10 p.m. Friday with a planned destination of Toronto, then Niagara Falls and finally a return to Breslau.
At some point during the flight, unknown difficulties were encountered and the plane crashed to the ground.
The investigation is continuing.
