Colleen Shields has some unfinished business on Lake Ontario.

The Georgetown, Ont., woman, 60, is set to swim the lake and planned to dive into the water from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. If she makes it to Toronto she’ll be the oldest woman to make the swim.

But it’s not about a record for her.

“I’m just finishing my business,” she said. “I’ve done some unsuccessful attempts and I just can’t let it go.”

Shields said she first swam the lake when she paced for a friend in 1989. She’s done it twice since then.

She said she’ll be taking off from the gazebo at Queen’s Royal Park and swimming to Marilyn Bell Park in Toronto. She figured the swim would take her 18 to 20 hours.

The sense of triumph, she said, is palpable when the swim is over.

“It’s overwhelming, I find,” she said.

“When you’re coming through the breakwall, it’s very emotional.”

Last month, Annaleise Carr, 14, of Norfolk County, Ont., became the youngest person to swim across Lake Ontario.
