Kingston police confirmed that a pedestrian was killed after a collision with a VIA train in the west end of Kingston, Tuesday.

KINGSTON, Ont. -- A VIA passenger train en route from Toronto to Kingston struck and killed a person in the west end of the city late Tuesday afternoon.

Police have confirmed that one person is dead as a result of the collision.

The train was eastbound and had just passed Coronation Boulevard when the person was hit.

The engine stopped at the top of Rankin Crescent. The victim was found on the tracks west of the street.

Trains were stopped in both directions while emergency personnel were on the tracks.

The coroner was called to the scene, and detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division and forensic identification officers were also called in.

There were no reported injuries on the train.

Sam Roesch, who just graduated from Queen's engineering program, was at the station waiting for a train to Ottawa when an announcement was broadcast saying there would be delays due to an electrical problem. He said that soon after, a VIA employee confirmed to passengers that a person had been struck and killed by a train.

Passengers were told they could wait out the delay while the investigation continued or take a refund on their tickets. Roesch said he had elected to wait and try to get a train Tuesday night.

Several city councillors, along with some city staff, were on trains returning to Kingston after a trip to Queen's Park, in Toronto, where they had been taking part in “Kingston Advocacy Day.”

Mayor Mark Gerretsen raised the accident on social media just after 5:30 p.m. “I am on the train 3 minutes from Kingston Station (Collins Bay maybe) and it stopped because it hit someone. Pray the person is OK.”

A Via Rail employee confirmed that the train involved in the incident had left Toronto at 3:15 p.m. but as of 7 p.m. there was no estimate when the train or passengers would be able to leave the site.

A train that left Toronto at 3:30 p.m. bound for Kingston was stopped at Napanee, where passengers were loaded onto buses for the remainder of their trip.
