OTTAWA — The long road to recovery for double-lung transplant recipient Helene Campbell has taken another detour.
The tireless organ donor advocate has revealed that her new lungs are improving, but that her kidneys are causing trouble.
"They're not really doing their job," she tweeted Thursday. "Silly-looking kidneys."
Campbell elaborated on her blog.
"All transplant recipients expect some issues," she wrote. "My new lungs are doing their job of making the oxygen, but my blood isn't doing a good job of carrying that oxygen."
She said her doctors believe it has something to do with her kidneys.
"I am not worried because my doctors are working on it."
As always, her tone remained positive and upbeat.
"I am down to about 30 pills a day!" she wrote.
Even simple things like being able to sit by a campfire ("a definite no no when you're on oxygen") appear to be bringing her great joy.
Twitter users, as always, have rallied to Campbell's support, spurred on by a request for pep talks — directed to her kidneys, of course.
"Seriously kidneys ... straighten up and fly right!" urged one user.
"Threaten them with kidney pie," wrote another.
Campbell still plans to return to Ellen DeGeneres' television show for a long-promised dance. She's been a guest on the show before.
"It's just a matter of health," she wrote. "I want to dance at my BEST. Ya know?"
