ASCOT CORNER, QUE. — A fun family outing turned tragic Friday in a Quebec town when a man and his nine-year-old grandson fell through the ice and died.

The grandfather and the young boy were skating Friday on a lake in Ascot Corner, Que., a town about 165 km east of Montreal, when the ice gave way beneath them at around 4:45 p.m.

The boy's grandmother, who was nearby when he and his 64-year-old grandfather fell, tried to save the victims but was unable to.

Rescuers found them unconscious beneath two metres of water.

The two were transported to hospital. The boy died in hospital a few hours after his grandfather.

The grandmother suffered hypothermia and was still in hospital on Saturday.

Provincial police met with witnesses and said they were trying to determine the facts of the tragedy.
