Toronto students stage walkouts amid teacher job action

Student walkout

TORONTO - Students at a North York high school staged a walkout Monday morning as teachers escalated job action.

Toronto District School Board student trustee Kouroush Houshmand says the protest - scheduled for 9:45 a.m. at Earl Haig Secondary School - is not necessarily in support of the teachers or the province.

“Since we are not voters, the situation can get messy and people may not think it’s imminent, but it really is,” she said.

Teachers at the school assembled in the front courtyard a few minutes before the official start of their day at 8:35 a.m. Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation branch president Jamie Cheslo says it’s “essentially” about their constitutional rights.
