PEMBROKE, Ont. -- A Pembroke man arrested for biting a dog on a city street apologized in court for hurting “his best friend.”

Ronald Samuel, 23, pleaded guilty Monday to causing distress to an animal under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Police were called to Christie St. and Pembroke St. W. on Sept. 26 after people reported hearing a dog in distress.

Bylaw enforcement officer Michael Street subsequently took a female Straffordshire terrier named Jazzy into custody and police apprehended a man under the Ontario Mental Health Act.
