WINNIPEG - Mercy For Animals Canada is demanding that four major grocery businesses stop purchasing meat from hog farms that mistreat their pigs.

"We are calling upon Sobeys, Walmart, Loblaws and Metro to take a stand against animal abuse and stop stocking their shelves with meat from these hog farms," Twyla Francois, investigations director for the non-profit animal rights group said at a press conference on Monday.

Francois made the demand after showing a secretly-shot video of the disturbing way pigs were treated at a Puratone Corp., farm near Arborg, Man., in August and September the past summer.

The video reveals the appalling way the pigs that are kept in tight metal cages (gestation crates) that often results in physical damage to the animals and sometimes, an inhumane death.

Male piglets were also castrated without the use of any painkillers and sometimes killed by simply slamming them on a concrete floor.
