SAULT STE. MARIE, ONT. - Poor weather is hampering efforts to clear nearly 18,500 kilograms of explosives from a rolled over transport near Wawa, Ont., that forced the closure of a stretch of the Trans Canada Highway.

The rig rolled on Highway 17, 35 kilometres south the township, at about 4 a.m. Thursday, closing the roadway between Wawa and Batchawana, Ont.

Police stayed two kilometres from the crash site prior to their arrival.

“The load is quite volatile,” Ontario Provincial Police Const. Monique Baker said, adding electronic detonators are in a caged storage area and could be triggered by radio signals.
