SHAWINIGAN, QUE. - A funeral home in central Quebec has apologized after placing the wrong body in an open coffin prior to a weekend funeral.

The mistake can't be undone because the Oscar St-Ours funeral home mistakenly cremated Marguerite Mercier-Pelletier's body prior to the service in this town two hours east of Montreal.

The family had a rude surprise when they arrived at the viewing on Friday only to find a person they didn't recognize lying in the casket.

They immediately notified the funeral home about the mistake.

St-Ours has admitted to a paperwork error that resulted in the 81-year-old woman's body being incinerated.

The woman's brother tells QMI Agency that he doesn't have any hard feelings, but other relatives aren't as sure.

Some are considering their options, saying the mistake is inexcusable.

St-Ours says it has never placed the wrong body in a casket in 91 years of operation.
