OTTAWA – Crews resorted to "desperate measures" but couldn't save a 43-year-old woman trapped in a car submerged in a ditch in west Ottawa on Thursday.

Firefighters were waist-deep in water in the ditch, trying frantically to free the seatbelted woman, whose head was under water.

Her black car was on its roof, wedged in a ditch, with water up to its wheels, say officials. The call came in at 8:16 a.m. but it is unknown how long the woman may have been trapped.

Firefighters tried to pry the doors open using the Jaws of Life and tried to smash in the through the backseat. A tow truck was used to flip the car. The woman was pulled out of the car at about 8:40 a.m.
