Social media threat closes Alberta school

EDMONTON - Students at a Devon, Alta., K-8 school went on Christmas break early after a former student made a threat against the school Thursday.

Holy Spirit Catholic School remained closed Friday following the threat made on social media Thursday.

A former student at the school made the threat, but police say there's nothing to fear.

According to Evergreen Catholic School Board superintendent Cindi Vaselenak, officials decided to cancel classes Friday to minimize parents' concerns.

Vaselenak said because of the deadly school shooting in Connecticut, along with the Christmas break scheduled to begin Saturday, it made sense to close the school a day early.

On Dec. 14, Adam Lanza, 20, opened fire at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., killing 20 children, six adult staff members and himself.

Vaselenak said RCMP have investigated and there is no reason to believe parents or students should be concerned.
